5. Eat chicken feet at Yum Cha

It’s funny how “Asian” I can be and yet, I never tried chicken feet. It’s an Asian delicacy that makes me questions the most obvious question of them all: Why!? Why do we eat crazy, exotic looking things!? Do we like challenging ourselves to see if our body can take it!? I DON’T!

But here we are… I am regretfully proud to tick this off my list. I am a complete Asian now, people. I can obviously turn around to the next person with absolute pride and say, “HEY! I ate chicken feet!”. I can also guarantee that they think I’m either crazy or pity pat me on my back… please just pity pat me. But yes. I ate it.

This particular person I chose to initiate this challenge has already been on a couple of food conquests with me, including a Costco pizza challenge and crazy wings challenge just to name a few. Of course they were never successful (mainly because of him…kidding) but nevertheless I always seem to have fun with my big friendly giant, Simon. Don’t judge us but we are absolute pigs when it comes to good food.

Simon and I decided one night to tick something off my bucket list and of course, I vocalised a food challenge for us cause after all, who is daring enough to eat chicken feet for their first time but him…

….and also it was his day off.

I decided to be a delightful little leprechaun (mind you, I’m only 5ft and he is way over 6ft) and swing by his place at approx. 11am. I also forgot that he is a gamer and being his day off, sleep is for the weak as they usually say so that probably was a bad idea. But Yum Cha opens at 12pm and I was quite famish. Food before bros and hoes! Sorry!

So here are a few tips when it comes to Yum Cha, people:

  • Always book before you arrive otherwise prepare to face the consequences of waiting
  • Always give yourself half an hour to find parking, especially if you live in an area dominated by Asians AND it’s the weekends
  • Prepare to spend money and explore your taste palette!
  • It’s mostly a lunch thing

THE EXPERIENCE!? I made a face. It wasn’t one of those “Oh my! I can’t believe I never had it before!” face. It was more of a “Wow… I can’t believe I just ate it” kind of face. The texture was… indescribable. Very chewy and quite a hassle when gnarling on the toes. Simon didn’t particularly enjoyed it too but nevertheless we tried it. We ate it. Would we do it again though? No way! It was a clucked up experience…

…Yes. That was a pun.
